Casa das Penhas Douradas is a charming country hotel set in the Serra da Estrela Nature Park mountains.
The hotel is 1550 metres up in Penhas Douradas surrounded by beautiful wilderness and superb landscapes, looking down on the town of Manteigas.
Penhas Douradas was the first mountain resort in Portugal. The tiny village began life in the early 1900s when a series of chalets, were built there. They were unlike anything else in the country at the time. A hundred years on and they are still almost untouched It is a truly unique and mystical place.
The Casa das Penhas Douradas is housed in an old mountain hotel that dates back to the beginnings of Penhas Douradas that has been completely renovated.
It is a place to relax in comfort and drink in the silence with astounding views as far as the eye an see.
It is also the starting point for lots of foot paths through the breath-taking Serra da Estrela that no-one really knows. The Serra changes so much from one part to another, from season to season and is so different from any other upland areas. Everyone just calls it the “Serra” as if it only needs a first name… |
